Benefits

If you are part of a military family and currently thinking about getting a new cash back credit card, make sure to consider USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature®. This card will allow you to earn an unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase.

What is really great about this card is that it caters to past and present military. When you are on deployment or PCA, you will receive a 4% APR for 12 months on any current balance. Once the 12-month period is complete the APR will change to 12.90% - 26.90% Variable.

The card also comes with a special SCRA APR. When you enter into active duty and your account has a balance, you will receive a 4% APR until one year after your active duty is complete. In addition to both of these great benefits, USAA will also refund all finance charges you might accrue during a qualified military campaign.

Things to Consider

USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature® is great because it offers a flat cash back option. Unfortunately, this card will not come with a sign-up bonus like other cash back cards do.

Verdict

If you are active military or a veteran, then USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature® is a great option. You will receive special rates during active duty and while you are on deployment. Plus, there is no annual fee.

Benefits

If you have been working your way back from poor credit, you might have been using a secured credit card. Now that your score has improved, it’s time to choose something with a little more freedom. For anyone with military ties, that card could be USAA Secured Card® Platinum Visa®.

This card will allow you to continue building your credit score, without requiring you to have a deposit on the account. Cash advances and balance transfers are not available with this card, which is a good thing. It will allow you to ignore the things might help accumulate debt and let you focus on building your credit score.

This card will offer a few military benefits. You will receive a 4% APR for up to one year if you are deployed or receive PCA orders. Additionally, you will receive 4% SCRA APR when you go into active duty. This will last until up to 12 months after active duty ends. You will also have all finance charges reimbursed while you are serving an active military campaign.

Things to Consider

Keep in mind that this card is the next step in the path to rebuilding your credit. You will not earn rewards for signing up or on purchases. USAA will assess your account occasionally and if they see your credit score increasing, then they might place you in a premium reward card.

Something else to consider is that the standard APR on this card is pretty high. It’s a 10.90% - 20.90% Variable depending on your creditworthiness. This means it’s important that you do your best to keep your balance low, so you are not paying finance charges. This card also comes with a $35 annual fee.

Verdict

If you have been working hard to rebuild your credit while serving our country, then USAA Secured Card® Platinum Visa® is a great next step. You will lose the need for a security deposit like secured cards require, and you will be able to continue working to improving your credit score.

Methodology SmartAsset has developed a quantitative and independent system for evaluating the relative value of a credit card offer versus other offers in the marketplace. Our system evaluates cards based exclusively on their features, such as their rewards earning rate (if applicable), fees, perks, and rewards program redemption options. The annual rewards values on this page are calculated using annual spending assumptions in various categories such as, but not limited to, gas, restaurants, airfare, and US supermarkets. These spending assumptions are built on research that SmartAsset has conducted on existing cash back credit cardholders. Our promise with our credit card recommendations is that we will always strive to have the most comprehensive, accurate, and objective method of evaluating credit card offers. Any recommendations are solely determined by the result of this research and model, and is never influenced by any fees, commissions, or other forms of compensation that SmartAsset may receive from credit card issuers for leads generated on our website.
