Best Chase Credit Card for Travel

Benefits

If you are looking to add a new Chase credit card to your wallet, then it doesn’t get much better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. You will have the chance to earn 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards bonus points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months. This card includes benefits such as a $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit, 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 2x points on other travel purchases, 3x points on dining purchases at restaurants, eligible delivery and take out worldwide, and earn 1x point per dollar on everything else.

One of the major reasons why this card is so popular each year, is because of its flexibility. Some travel credit cards will limit how you can use the rewards you earn. Sometime you’re only able to use them on a single airline or hotel. With Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, you have choices.

You can choose to redeem your points for travel through the Ultimate Rewards® portal and receive a value of 1.25 cents per point. Alternatively, you can choose to transfer your points to one of several loyalty partners including, Southwest Airlines, Hyatt, United Airlines, and more. If you’d prefer to use the points for something other than travel, you can receive cash back or even use them to shop on Amazon.com.

Things to Consider

One of the big negatives with most reward cards that offer large signup bonuses, is that often times they have an annual fee. Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is no different, there is a $95 annual fee.

Verdict

Not only is Chase Sapphire Preferred Card one of the best travel credit cards available, but it’s also the best overall credit card from Chase. Combine the welcome bonus, ability to earn bonus rewards on purchases, and its flexibility, and it’s no wonder why this is such a sought after credit card.

Best Chase Credit Card for Cash Back

Benefits

If you are looking to add a cash back card to your wallet, then you can’t get much better than earning 5% back. That’s exactly what you get from the Chase Freedom Flex. Each quarter, Chase will select different categories where you can earn 5% cash back, up to $1,500 per quarter. If you make a travel purchase through Chase Ultimate Rewards, you will earn 5% cash back, as well. Drugstore and restaurant dining purchases will earn you 3% cash back. Any other purchase that you make, will earn unlimited 1% back.

You will also receive a $200 sign-up bonus when you sign up for Chase Freedom Flex and spend $500 in the first 3 months.

Chase Freedom Flex is also great for anyone looking for an introductory APR offer. For the first 15 months you will receive 0% APR on purchases. Once the introductory period has ended the APR will change to 15.74% - 24.49% Variable.

Things to Consider

This card comes with no annual fee, which is pretty uncommon for a reward card. One thing that you need to watch out for is each quarter you will need to manually opt into each bonus rotating category. If you don’t opt in, you will only receive the standard 1% cash back.

Verdict

For several years the Chase Freedom Flex has been a consumer favorite for earning cash back. Even though you are required to be proactive and opt into the bonus categories, the work is worth it for most.

Best Chase Credit Card for Balance Transfers

Benefits

If you are struggling with debt, applying for another credit card may not seem like the smartest move. In reality, it might be the best thing to help you get out of debt. That’s because a balance transfer card can help you cut the interest you’re currently on the hook for, and focus on paying off the balance.

The Chase Slate Edge is one of the best balance transfer cards currently available. First off, you’ll have access to a reduced balance transfer fee of $5 or 3%, whichever is greater, if you transfer a balance within the first 60 days of opening your account. After that, the balance transfer fee will increase to either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

With the Chase Slate Edge, you will receive 0% APR for the first 18 months on both balance transfers and purchases. Once the introductory period is over, the APR will change to 15.74% - 24.49% Variable. Additionally, you’ll be able to reduce your APR by 2% every year if you pay your bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on your card by your next account anniversary. However, you won’t be able to lower your APR any more than the Prime Rate plus 9.74%.

Things to Consider

The no annual fee Chase Slate Edge usually requires an applicant to have good credit. This can be a problem for many people that are currently struggling with debt. Chase also has a couple of requirements on balance transfers. First, you can’t transfer a balance from another Chase credit card. Second, you can’t transfer a balance that is greater than $15,000, or higher than your credit limit.

Verdict

If you are looking to transfer a balance away from a high interest credit card, then Chase Slate Edge is a great choice. There are other cards that offer similar 0% introductory periods, however the ability to reduce your APR is a game changer. Depending on your balance, this could be a big savings.

Best Chase Credit Card for Airlines

Benefits

If you are looking for a great airline credit card, then look no further than British Airways Visa Signature Card. This card offers incredible value to anyone who frequently flies British Airways or any of its partners.

Earn up to 100,000 Avios. Earn 75,000 Avios when you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months with the card and earn an additional 25,000 Avios after you spend $20,000 in the first 12 months with the card. For flights within the United States the only two airlines that you can use Avios for are American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

Best Chase Credit Card for Exclusive Perks

Earn 3x points on all other travel and when you dine at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and eligible delivery services), and receive 1x point per dollar spent on everything else. When it’s time to redeem the points you have earned, you can do one of two things. You can redeem them through Chase Ultimate Rewards® for travel, merchandise or statement credits. You can also transfer them to one of several different partners, including United, Hyatt, Southwest Airlines and more.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve also comes with several travel perks. You will receive up to a $300 reimbursement in the form of a statement credit automatically each account anniversary year, for travel purchases charged to your card. You will also receive up to a $100 statement credit to cover the fee for Global Entry or TSA Precheck® application. You will also receive access to over 1,300+ airport lounges worldwide with a Priority Pass(tm) membership.

Things to Consider

Even though the perks are some of the most generous you will find, there is a high $550 annual fee. If you do a lot of traveling and will be able to take advantage of the $300 annual travel credit, then the annual fee is essentially reduced to $250.

Verdict

If you are a frequent traveler that can justify the high annual fee, then this is one of the best premium travel cards available. Its high sign-up bonus, bonus points on travel and at restaurants, plus all the other travel benefits, make this a great addition to your wallet.

Methodology SmartAsset has developed a quantitative and independent system for evaluating the relative value of a credit card offer versus other offers in the marketplace. Our system evaluates cards based exclusively on their features, such as their rewards earning rate (if applicable), fees, perks, and rewards program redemption options. The annual rewards values on this page are calculated using annual spending assumptions in various categories such as, but not limited to, gas, restaurants, airfare, and US supermarkets. These spending assumptions are built on research that SmartAsset has conducted on existing cash back credit cardholders. Our promise with our credit card recommendations is that we will always strive to have the most comprehensive, accurate, and objective method of evaluating credit card offers. Any recommendations are solely determined by the result of this research and model, and is never influenced by any fees, commissions, or other forms of compensation that SmartAsset may receive from credit card issuers for leads generated on our website.
